2. Sample selection

From the catalogue by Olsen (1983) of four-colour photometry of all A5-G0 stars in the HD catalogue to mv = 8.3, those F stars were selected which have evolved sufficiently off the ZAMS (i.e. by roughly 0.5 - 2.0 mag in Mv) that individual ages can be determined from comparisons with theoretical isochrones. The following overall criteria were used (the precise tex2html_wrap_inline1217c1  limit varying from 0.18 to 0.12 with b-y  within this range):

0.219 < b-y  < 0.391

0.066 < tex2html_wrap_inline1217c1  < 0.15.

Except that the selection of stars took place before Htex2html_wrap_inline1197 photometry was complete for all the stars, these criteria are quite similar to those used by E93 to define their sample of stars.

As the CORAVEL observations got under way it was realized, however, that over half of the stars with b-y  < 0.27 were rotating too rapidly to yield usable radial velocities. The stars in the colour range 0.219 < b-y  < 0.270 and north of declination tex2html_wrap_inline1249 were therefore transferred to the CfA instruments, together with a few later-type stars that were also rotating too rapidly for CORAVEL (and are found here to be short-period binaries). There is, however, enough overlap with the early CORAVEL results to ensure good consistency of the radial-velocity zero-points of the two systems.

Of the 669 stars on the original observing list (26% of all stars in the Olsen catalogues in the same colour range and over the whole sky), results are presented here for a total of 595 stars (Tables 1 and 2 (click here)), while 73 proved to be rotating too rapidly even for the CfA technique (v sin i  > 120 km s-1); for completeness, these stars are listed in Table 4 (click here). A new, precise spectroscopic orbit for the double-lined eclipsing binary EI Cep, which is included in the photometrically defined sample, will be published separately.
