1 Introduction

In this paper we compare sources common to the Parkes radio surveys and the Infra-Red Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) surveys using primarily the radio results of Filipovic et al. (1995; hereafter Paper IV), Filipovic et al. (1996; hereafter Paper IVa), Filipovic et al. (1997; hereafter Paper V) and the IR catalogues of Schwering & Israel (1990; see also Schwering & Israel 1989; Schwering 1989). We classify each source as either an Hii region, supernova remnant (SNR) or background object.

In Sect. 2 we discuss briefly radio and infrared (IR) observations of discrete sources towards the MCs. In Sects. 3 and 4 we analyse and discuss all discrete sources common to the radio and IR surveys. In Sect. 5 we classify previously unknown sources from the field of the MCs and, finally, in Sect. 6 we discuss the radio-to-IR flux relationships for all sources in common towards the MCs.
